What Is a Spiritual Medium? Everything You Need to Know

What Is a Spiritual Medium

A spirit medium is somebody who communicates with those who have passed from this life into the spirit world. The role of the medium is to act as a bridge between the living and the communicator in spirit, bringing through evidence, memories, feelings, and personality that can be recognised by the person receiving the reading. Although the words are often confused, a spiritual medium and a psychic do not work in exactly the same way.

So What Is A Medium Really?

One of the questions I have been asked more times than almost any other during my years of working is simply, what is a medium?

The word itself is actually very simple. To define the medium properly, it means somebody standing in the middle between two worlds. A spirit medium works with communication from those who have passed and attempts to interpret that communication clearly for the person sitting with them.

People often expect mediumship to feel dramatic or unsettling because that is how it is portrayed in films and television. In reality, genuine mediumship is usually much quieter and more natural than people imagine.

Spirit communication often begins very subtly.

A medium may suddenly become aware of somebody’s personality before any words or information arrive. At other times it begins with an emotion, a memory, or a very strong sense of presence that does not belong to the medium themselves. Sometimes a name repeats internally several times until it is spoken aloud. Sometimes spirit draws attention to the smallest details because those details are what create recognition for the sitter.

Over the years I have had spirit communicators bring forward:

  • the smell of pipe tobacco
  • a favourite song
  • a set of pearls kept in a jewellery box
  • a phrase somebody repeated all their life
  • the habit of tapping fingers against a table while thinking

These are often the moments that affect people most deeply because they belong to the real character of the person in spirit.

A medium spirit connection is rarely experienced as something frightening. Quite the opposite, in fact. Many people describe the feeling as comforting because the communicator still feels entirely themselves in personality, humour, and emotional presence.

You may also hear people use terms such as psychic medium, clairvoyant medium, or spiritual channel. The wording differs slightly, although they are all describing somebody working with spirit communication in one form or another.

Medium vs. Psychic | What’s the Difference?

This is one of the areas people are most confused about.

A psychic usually works with the energy around the living person. They may sense emotional changes, relationship difficulties, future possibilities, family situations, or shifts happening around somebody’s life.

  • A spirit medium works specifically with those who have passed.
  • The easiest way I have always explained it is this:
  • A psychic reads the person.
  • A medium reads the communicator in spirit connected to the person.

Many mediums are naturally psychic as well because both abilities rely on sensitivity and awareness. In fact, psychic development is often the foundation mediumship develops from. Learning to recognise intuition, emotional impressions, and subtle energy usually comes long before spirit communication strengthens fully.

People searching online often use phrases such as medium ghost because they are trying to understand how spirit communication actually feels. Genuine mediumship rarely resembles the dramatic portrayals people expect.

Strong communication from spirit often feels surprisingly ordinary.

You may suddenly become aware of somebody’s humour exactly as it was in life. A communicator may interrupt impatiently because that was their personality. A mother in spirit may come forward carrying the same emotional warmth and concern she always had for her family.

That individuality matters enormously in mediumship.

The aim is not simply to say somebody is present. The aim is to recognise the person in spirit as the individual they still are.

What Does a Spiritual Medium Do?

People are often nervous before their first sitting because they genuinely do not know what to expect.

That is completely understandable.

Television and social media have created a very distorted picture of mediumship over the years. Many people expect a medium to immediately announce dramatic information the moment the sitting begins. Genuine mediumship is usually far calmer and more conversational than that.

A spiritual medium sits quietly with the person receiving the reading and begins building awareness of spirit communication around them. Sometimes the connection forms quickly and strongly. At other times it develops gradually through smaller impressions which strengthen as the sitting continues.

The information itself can arrive in many ways.

A medium may become aware of:

  • names or initials
  • memories
  • personality traits
  • humour
  • emotional characteristics
  • physical symptoms connected to passing
  • anniversaries or meaningful dates
  • family relationships
  • favourite objects or possessions
  • phrases somebody always used

What surprises many people is how ordinary the strongest evidence often is.

I remember one sitting where spirit repeatedly showed me somebody carefully folding tissues into small squares while speaking on the telephone. The sitter immediately recognised it as her mother’s habit, something nobody outside the family would ever have known.

That is what evidential mediumship is truly about.

Not vague statements that could apply generally, but specific details carrying recognition, memory, and emotional truth.

A good medium should never force information onto somebody or pressure them into agreement. Not every piece of communication is understood immediately. Sometimes recognition comes later when the person reflects on the sitting afterwards. Spirit communication can also feel symbolic at times, particularly in the early stages of the connection.

No two sittings ever feel exactly alike because no two communicators in spirit are the same.

Some arrive strongly with humour and personality immediately. Others come forward gently and emotionally, particularly after illness or difficult family circumstances before passing. Some communicators are talkative. Others are quieter and communicate more through emotion than words.

That difference in personality is often what makes mediumship feel so personal and convincing to the sitter.

How Do Mediums Work? The Process Explained

People have tried explaining how mediums work for generations, although no medium can honestly claim to understand every aspect of the process completely.

The closest comparison I can give is that mediumship feels rather like becoming aware of a frequency already present around you. The radio analogy is often used because it describes the experience reasonably well. Spirit communication rarely feels physical in the way people imagine. It feels more like tuning awareness towards impressions that exist beyond ordinary conversation and thought.

One of the biggest misunderstandings around mediumship is the belief that information arrives perfectly formed.

It rarely does.

Communication from spirit often begins in fragments:

  • a sudden emotion
  • a memory
  • an image
  • a physical sensation
  • a name
  • an awareness of personality

The medium must then interpret those impressions correctly and relay them clearly to the sitter.

This is where the clair senses become important within mediumship:

  • Clairvoyance — seeing images, memories, or symbols internally
  • Clairaudience — hearing words, phrases, or names within the mind
  • Clairsentience — sensing emotions or physical feelings connected to spirit
  • Clairempathy — strongly experiencing another person’s emotional state
  • Clairgustance — tasting something associated with the communicator
  • Clairscent — smelling scents linked to memory or identity
  • Clairtangency — receiving impressions through touching objects or photographs

Different mediums naturally work more strongly through different senses.

Some see information very clearly. Others feel spirit emotionally long before any visual impressions arrive. Some mediums experience strong physical sensations connected to illness or passing. Others mainly receive memories, phrases, or personality characteristics.

For me, mediumship has always felt less like hearing somebody speak aloud and more like becoming strongly aware of their presence, character, humour, and emotional energy until they become difficult to ignore.

That awareness gradually strengthens throughout the sitting.

A communicator in spirit can feel entirely different from the one before them. The atmosphere changes. The emotional feeling changes. Even the pace of the communication changes depending on the personality coming forward.

That is often what convinces people during a sitting more than anything else. The communicator still feels like themselves.

Looking for a Spiritual Medium?

Finding the right medium is a very personal decision. People searching for spiritual mediums near me are often doing so during periods of grief, uncertainty, or emotional change, so it is important to choose somebody experienced, grounded, and genuine in their approach.

A good sitting should never leave you feeling pressured or uncomfortable. It should feel calm, respectful, and personal, with evidence and communication that carries meaning for you.
